The Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF) 2017: A Simple Guide to Parents and Teachers.
The Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF) 2017: A Simple Guide to Parents and Teachers.
The
Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF) of 2017 is the blueprint for
Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). It represents a significant shift
from the previous system, moving the focus from what a learner knows
(content) to what a learner can do (competencies).
The Core Vision
The
overarching goal of the BECF is to nurture an Engaged, Empowered, and
Ethical Citizen, by developing the full potential of every learner.
1. Key Pillars of the BECF (CBC)
The
framework is built around three main concepts that every parent and teacher
should understand:
- Competencies: These are the
essential, lifelong abilities learners must acquire. Learning is now about
demonstrating these skills in real-life situations.
- The 7 Core
Competencies are:
- Communication
and Collaboration
- Critical
Thinking and Problem Solving
- Creativity and
Imagination
- Citizenship
- Digital
Literacy
- Learning to
Learn (Self-Directed Learning)
- Self-Efficacy
(Confidence and belief in one's ability to succeed)
- Values: The curriculum
is driven by national values (like patriotism, social equity, and national
unity) and moral principles, aiming to develop morally upright citizens.
- Pertinent and
Contemporary Issues (PCIs): These are current societal
challenges and topics (like environmental conservation, health education,
and disaster risk reduction) that are integrated across all subjects to
make learning relevant to the learner's world.
2. Shift in Focus: Learning and
Assessment
|
Old
System (8-4-4) |
New
System (CBC) - Guided by BECF |
|
Focus: Content coverage
and passing a final, high-stakes exam. |
Focus: Mastery of core competencies
and values. |
|
Teaching: Teacher-centered;
lectures and memorization. |
Teaching: Learner-centered;
practical activities, group work, and projects. |
|
Assessment: Primarily Summative
(end-of-cycle exams like KCPE/KCSE). |
Assessment: Balanced mix of Formative
(continuous, classroom-based assessment) and Summative assessment like
KPSEA, KJSEA and KCBE. Assessment is used to improve learning, not just to
rank learners. |
3. The New Education Structure (2-6-3-3-3)
The
BECF introduced a new structure to replace the 8-4-4 system:
- Early Years
Education (EYE):
2 years (Pre-Primary 1 & 2)
- Primary
Education:
6 years (Grade 1 to Grade 6)
- Junior Secondary
School (JSS):
3 years (Grade 7 to Grade 9)
- Senior Secondary
School (SSS):
3 years (Grade 10 to Grade 12)
- University
Education/Tertiary Education: 3 years
The
emphasis in the early years is on holistic development and nurturing the
learner's potential, preparing them for the later stages.
π What Does This Mean
for You?
- For Parents: Your role is
now more crucial than ever. You are expected to be an active partner in
your child's learning. This means supporting their practical assignments,
facilitating exposure to different experiences, and helping them apply the
learned competencies at home.
- For Teachers: You are
shifting from being a dispenser of knowledge to a facilitator and guide.
You will use interactive, practical teaching methods and a wide variety of
continuous assessment tools (like observation and checklists) to help
learners develop the core competencies.
The
BECF is a roadmap designed to produce a well-rounded Kenyan graduate who is
equipped with the skills and values needed to thrive in the 21st Century
economy.
